It took the right combination of Indigo and Henna to create this deep ebony classic. Indigo fights for the dark reflective cool shades, while henna battles for the vivid auburn warm notes.
Using our balanced proprietary combination (and some time & natural oxidation) they blend into a beautiful deep black: natural highlights remain, while the undertones dance between brisk and toasty.
The added Ayurvedic herbs condition while you color—all done naturally…pretty sweet.
Quick Note: Very light hair (gray to blonde) may require two applications for richest black color—may come out Dark Brown initially. Depends on hair health and previous coloring process. Existing dark colors will come out very dark, Natural Black with one application.
To ensure Rich Black on lighter hair use the classic 2-Step Rich Black Process:
1) Apply Pure Henna First, then 2) Pure Indigo Second. Details Here: Rich Black 2-Step
Our Henna-Based Hair Dyes Are Your Best Choice:

I have brown hair, I used the henna as directed and it literally did nothing. I am super disappointed and I feel scammed to be honest.

I love this dye! I decided to switch to this after reading the horror stories about box dye, and I’m not disappointed. I did the 2 step process on my blonde hair, then did a second layer of this dye and now my roots are a rich, warm black! I love how shiny and iridescent it looks. It makes my hair super soft and thick too, worth the effort lol, smells amazing too

I’ve been using henna once a month and I notice my excessive shedding ceased. Also my hair became stronger and my curl pattern is a lot more defined. My hair is dark brown, so the henna makes my hair look natural brown. I also use it on my eye brows but only for 20 minutes.

Ok, you have to get the hang of it if you’ve never used it. Add water to a pudding texture, like the directions say and condition afterward. Leave it on the whole two hours. First time gray coverage does need a couple sessions, but after you establish the henna on the gray, just one application will do, but you have to do it often.
I do it every two weeks and am coming up on two years. I have a lot of new hair growth, less hair fall, and haven’t had a single split end since starting. My hair does feel dry at first, even with conditioner (but that’s henna, not this product individually), but then I don’t wash it for a week, opting instead for low-poo once a week and water washes if needed in between. My hair is shiny, strong and looks good right out of bed in the morning. It seriously looks like the pic of the model.
This is my staple hair routine and even though I’d like to grow out my gray, the results are so good that I don’t want to change anything!

Absolutely the best!!

Absolutely the best! I have been using this black henna for nearly 10 years now! It always makes my hair so soft, shiny and very dark. No chemicals in this at all this is the real deal. Definitely buy from here, other henna might have additives in it but this is pure henna. This is the best quality henna I have used. The best thing about this is it doesnt fade and actually makes my hair grow faster. I will never go back to chemical dyes. I’m so happy I found this product and company! I will be using this forever!!! 😍😍😍❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰

I used this on top of already hennaed hair that was very orangey brown. It covered all of the orange and turned my hair jet black exactly like in the picture. Loved it!
Claudia –
Great it works!
Claudia –
Great it left my hair soft shiny manageable and it thicken it!
It didn’t color because I didn’t mix it correctly

I was looking to dye my medium-dark brown hair a blue-black or darker blue-brown without the cumbersome two-step method. I followed the instructions (but left the product on for 5 hours) and ended up with a pretty dark brown-black with an overall cool undertone but with some natural warmth in sections. It’s hard to explain but the cool-warm combo actually makes the colour appear more natural than obviously dyed. There is a natural gradient effect like I had in my regular, non-dyed hair. My hair was also just as shiny if not moreso than it was before being dyed. The few greys I have were also covered.
As for ease-of-use, I did not find the product to be messy. I applied it in the shower, carefully rinsed/washed any areas where the product fell and was able to do chores with my hair in the cap for the rest of the day. The product rinsed out quite easily. The smell lingers for 1-2 washes so I’d avoid getting to close to people if you can help it.
I definitely plan to continue using this product on my hair as I love the natural colour and effect it gives. It is also convenient and easy to use as a busy professional. I’m so happy this product exists!!

It had been a while for me since I’ve used henna, but I was excited to try this all natural alternative. My hair had been bleached, dyed red, and then died black with box dye. I was tired of stripping the color every time i shampooed, so I decided to give this a shot. The coverage was great, I waited 48 hrs before judging the color. I ended up with one odd patch that has a lot of red tone in it now, but I do think this is mainly because of all the layers of box dye my hair had before using this product. I give it 5 stars because it worked well and made my hair really shiny and smooth. Just placed my second order to try the 2 step method for black hair since my natural hair is very dark, and I also ordered one of the color-safe shampoo bars to try that out. (I currently use a more expensive “color-safe” shampoo bar that has been stripping my color like crazy, can’t wait to try this natural one!

This was my first time doing henna and im honestly so impressed. I have very dark hair but had a few pesky grays that were popping up. So I used the Natural Black. Loved applying it to hair as it felt like a spa day for my hair. Took me a while to rinse out of my hair since I have very thick curly hair. After I rinsed out with conditioner and let it air dry my hair was so shiny and the grays were gone. Will be buying again for sure. Thank You!
Gina Gilligo –
I promise you this will cover greys as long as you are patient and give it the time (about twice for me) to deposit the color.
I was scared to use henna, but made the switch in efforts to be environmentally friendly. I have heavily processed and colored hair and at the time I decided to dye, I had a strong ombre going from black to dark blonde.
My first round with henna was dark brown over the whole head. I left it on for 4 hours. It blended the ombre well, covered the blonde, but there were still greys. Over a week, the parts that were blonde lightened up to a warm light brown, but I noticed greys were really showing. I used the black on the roots only for 2 hours and the greys are ALL gone. After waiting 48 hours , I oiled my hair, then washed it – so soft and healthy! I am looking forward to maintaining my black roots and dark brown henna as time goes on.

The first time that I ever tried a henna product was two years ago from another company that claimed to be completely natural/pure. My scalp felt like it was on fire within the first 20 minutes of having it in. I immediately washed it out but it took over a week for the redness, soreness and itching of my scalp to start getting better. In the end, I blame myself for not taking the time to read the ingredients which did state that it contained PPD. My henna journey ended there until a friend mine was discussing her experience using henna from Henna Color Lab with someone else. I had a look at this website and liked what I seen but it took me awhile before placing my first order and I’m glad that I did.
It’s been 3 months of using the natural black henna every 3 weeks. My hair is definitely denser and healthier than it was before starting. Another thing that I noticed early on was that the thin lighter hairs on my temples got darker and look thicker. I usually just watch a movie during the time that I henna my hair. Time fly’s by pretty fast that way. I’ve gotten better at mixing and applying the henna and don’t make a mess anymore unlike the first few times.
It has an earthy scent that I personally don’t mind. It’s actually expected since henna is from a plant. Either way, the scent goes away after using shampoo/conditioner which I only use after 48 hours.
Great product + great company = me being happy 🙂

Loved the entire process (as did my partner – he loved putting it on my hair!) but the smell is awful. It was described as ‘earthy’ BUT smelled as bad as a wet, rotting barn. Absolutely awful!

I’ve used natural back twice now and both times I’ve seen no change in hair color and absolutely no gray coverage at all. Very disappointing!

This stuff is AWFUL! Bought the natural black and my hair has a red tint, but the worst part is how DRY and DAMAGED my hair feels. I’ve been coloring my hair for a loonngg time now and my hair has NEVER felt this bad!

My first time using henna/indigo and I’m very impressed with the results (so far). I’ve been using Bigen permanent hair dye for 20+ years and lately my scalp is getting more and more inflamed after each use. I’m pretty sure I’ve developed an allergy to the PPD in it and I was very disappointed. I loved that dye (it was very permanent and didn’t ruin the texture of my hair). So I started researching other options and came across henna/indigo.
I like that it’s natural and doesn’t have any harmful chemicals. What I didn’t like was the extremely LONG processing time.
Well, I just finished dying my hair and am pleasantly surprised how well this covered my resistant grays!!
First of all, used a mixture of “natural black” and “mahogany”. I have very dark (nearly black with red highlights in the sun) hair.
Second, I did follow the existing gray root application process.
Third, to speed up the treatment time, I bought a heat cap (that you warm in the microwave) and used it to decrease the time by half. It worked great. I left the gray root treatment on for 30 min and the 2nd full head application on for 40 min. My grays are VERY resistant and this seemed to work very well.
Fifth, I ended up mixing the powder to a fairly watery consistency. It goes on and coats the hair very easily; however, it drips like crazy!!!! I might try to make it thicker next time.
Sixth, I did buy a cheap drop cloth and used it in my bathroom during this process. Very happy I did. Boy was it messy!!! I also purchased disposable gloves in my size – much easier to use than the oversized ones provided. — Oh, and I didn’t find the scent to be bad. Just “earthy”. Not offensive at all.
My hair feels so soft and the color is gorgeous!!! Can’t say much about fading at this time…
Ok- to sum up….
Pros…. All natural, no chemicals, very gentle, great color, awesome gray coverage
Cons… Messy!!! And longer than average processing time (considering having to do a double treatment for gray roots).
All in all, I plan to use this from now on!! Love it and so happy I found it!!!!

Bought black hair dye, my hair is naturally a very light brown, and this dye just made it way darker, but not black. My hair feels great and soft, but I’m still a little disappointed at the color. Also, this stuff didn’t spread in my hair very well, thank goodness I had a friend help me!

I normally don’t write reviews, but I had to after using this product. This is the best henna dying experience I’ve ever had. I’ve used Lush’s dark brown henna, and it ended up turning my hair a medium chestnut color, not to mention the process of melting down the henna was onerous and messy. After reading the reviews about Henna Color Lab, I thought I would give henna another shot. I ordered the dark brown and the black, and mixed the two together to create a rich dark brown. The process was super easy and not messy at all! I’ve had previous experience with henna so I know how to avoid any major messes, but this went on so easy, the application process was a breeze! I know some people complained about their gloves ripping, but mine didn’t. However, I was very careful in making sure they didn’t tear. I left it in for 1.5 hours, rinsed with conditioner, and blow dryed my hair. Today is day two, and I’m absolutely in love with the color of my hair. It turned into a deep chocolate brown with mahogany highlights. Not to mention, my hair is super soft, silky smoothe, and looks like I just got out of the hair salon. I will definitely be purchasing this product again!

This is infinitely more than I could have asked for. I feel so at ease and joyful to have found something that makes my raven hair stay glossy and dark AND is cutely free, vegan, and has ZERO harsh chemicals. This is just everything you could want! I’m in love! My hair feels so strong and is so shiny and looks like silk. My husband just pets my hair now lol. This is easy to use once your learn how much warm water to use with henna. The smell isn’t bad, and I just adore this product. I have nothing bad to say about this product.

Love this henna! I have tried the dark brown, and the wine red. Let me take a step back. Black is my favorite color in the world. Despite being fair skinned and naturally light brown that beautiful fake blue black has been my go to for almost 12 years! Unfortunately about 4 years ago I started to develop allergies to black hair dye, not only that but my thick curly hair had started breaking form dye and heat abuse. I tried a lot of one step black henndigo and none of them really worked for me, my hair would just be brown and it depressed me. I didn’t want to dye my hair so I just kept henna red. I finally tried HLC natural black and my hair is so soft and lush. My roots turned more of a dark brown but the rest of my hair is lovely black. I will probably just go over it again or try the two step but I am so happy that I get to have my favorite color again ^^ The only con for me is the indigo smell it makes me feel ill but nothing some tissue in the nose won’t fix!

This henna is excellent. I grew up around henna (it’s commonly used in my culture), so I knew to expect it to be messy, smell earthy, etc. That’s totally normal for henna. It won’t stain your hands, your bathtub or sink, etc as long as you wipe/wash it off right away (obviously fabric is another story, though), so the gloves being thin aren’t a big deal. (Just do it in the bathtub and rinse any splatter down the drain.) I have very dark ash-brown, almost black hair, and I used a 1:1 mix of black henna and dark brown henna to match my roots and take out sun highlights I had from last summer. The henna worked perfectly, darkening my hair to the exact color I wanted, a rich and extremely natural dark black/brown that matches my roots. It didn’t affect my curl pattern (yay!), and it conditioned my hair extremely well–my hair is now SUPER soft, shiny, thick, and very rich in color. I LOVE it! I have hard water, and that didn’t make any difference. I am really happy I found you guys–thank you!

So, I naturally have very dark hair with a lot of gray; not black necessarily but just about. I have struggled for years to find a dye that was dark enough without being black and that would stick to my grays (because usually the dye just washes straight off my silky silver strands). The effect was always either I looked like I had a receding hairline or the slightest bit of gold in a dye would turn my roots yellowish brown. Then I got this; I did the double process on the roots and even after the first hour when I went to rinse my grays were covered better than anything else I’ve tried. After the second treatment, the 2 hours my hair was back to it’s natural dark, dark brown (like the color of a coffee bean, so pretty) but without that harsh shellacked black look that hair-dye gives. I LOVE this. Plus, since my hair is growing out from a pixie I had to cut due to all the chemical damage, one package has lasted me 3 treatments doing the double process. Thank you Henna Color Lab for saving my hair and my poor overworked scalp! I love you guys!

Excellent first time experience. I have a mix of pretty curly shoulder length brown and grey that blended well with some white hairs mainly around face and brassy grey blending into my brown. Gives a worn out look – no vibrant color. I have also thinned alot on top. I colored with Olia Soft Black maybe 3 times in 2 years – only times I’ve colored in many years. I liked it – minimal breakage and top looked thicker. I wanted to avoid commercial dyes and decided to try Henna Color Labs Soft Black. 1 package mixed with 2 Tbsp. Amla Powder for easier wash out and of course extra nourishment as my hair is dry so I oil every night. Used hot filtered water to mix – not the easiest to work with but I managed – I made it like thick pudding so it didn’t run. This was the perfect amount for ample coverage. 4 Hours later I rinsed well. I was worried I’d see Reddish highlights especially on my grey but the color of my wet hair was perfect soft black – every strand – even those wiry whites that have a mind of their own. I immediately followed with the Indigo treatment which I also bought just in case I needed to get rid of any reddish tint. I didn’t need it though – but I went ahead. Left that on 1-1/2 hrs. My hair had that straw feeling people talk about when rinsing making it hard to remove so I just added a pump of my WEN cleansing conditioning wash and worked it through, which immediately changed the texture from straw to soft slip. Rinsed well and let air dry – blow drying frizzes my hair so I omitted that step. My hair is almost dry, very shiny, full of body – I have no relaxing of curl that most people experience using Henna. I believe the extra Amla powder I added was the reason. I won’t oil for a week so we’ll see how hair condition holds up. It was a fantastic result, aside from the skunk weed smell LOL. I know that will fade though. My only suggestion would be to include the stronger vinyl gloves. They fit well and stay on making for easier application. The included gloves are too big, ripped one down the seam during application so I have a stained hand. The instructions were excellent, well outlined and illustrated. I am sold on Henna Color Labs hair color for good. Really love it. Thank you for such quality, healthy products. The minor hassle of working with quality natural Henna coloring is so worth it.

I had bleached my hair to a nice, golden blonde that almost immediately got old with me lol (I look better with darker colors) so I wanted to dye my hair black because it’s my most favorite hair color. I purchased some regular black dye at the store and it quickly faded to a Brown (much like my natural color) so I threw a fit and color oops-d it back to blonde for a little while as I did research on more permanent solutions. Came across henna and indigo and what not for black hair but also heard horror stories of blondes getting green hair from it (actually that sounds super pretty but unfortunately it’s not considered “natural) and was a bit apprehensive about doing this color with my hair being so bright. I’ve found plenty of sites saying you can just darken the blonde with henna and THEN use indigo to blacken it, but I decided to take the leap of Faith and just purchase the straight black color (along with pure indigo just to make sure it darkened). Got an amazing result. After five minutes of being in my hair, the mixture turned to a jet black color. I rinsed it all out (which is not easy, definitely listen to it when it says use conditioner to make the particles come out easier!) and it was jet black, save for some spots that I missed because I suck at dying my own hair sometimes lol. But it was beautiful. Deep black that after a few days actually made my lighter spots darker. I did two treatments of this so I could get my hair completely black. Best. Hair dye. Ever.
TLDR: WORKS FANTASTIC FOR BLONDES!

My hair is dark close to black and my daughter’s hair are dark too but lighter then mine. The way we use this one step black henna is knowing it will make our hair darker and if we want more depth we are happy to do the treatment again in a week or two since it’s natural and only makes are natural curly hair more beautiful. My hair gets black fast. But if you have medium to light hair I wouldn’t expect black results from one treatment. I do put coconut milk and a little lemon juice for moisture and more color saturation.
Erica –
Great color! This is the perfect black that looks completely natural. My hair is the darkest brown with a lot of natural red highlights-this color somehow darkened it while keeping quite a bit of my natural highlights. As far as grey coverage I give it a 95% compared to the mahogany which would be 100%. The men at the local stores all stopped to tell me my hair looked good, lol. This will be my hair color until I’m 80! One thing I suggest with all henna colors is to wrap your hair in Saran Wrap for the required hours and I’m going to do a bit of mahogany on my greys before doing the two packets of natural black to see if I get 100% coverage. Cannot recommend this color enough!!

I have been using this mixed 1:1 with dark brown henna to cover my 20-30% premature grey hair since almost a year and I have been very satisfied.
This has been my savior during my pregnancy when I wanted to steer clear of any chemicals.
I can’t imagine using henna for that much premature for a very long term basis but that is general statement for any Henna mainly because it is little more cumbersome than say semi permanent dye and it does start to wash off sooner. I would have to use every week if I really wanted to hide them all the time!
It colors fairly well in about 2 hours of leaving on and most importantly the way these things fade, it makes for a much easier transition and even if you miss your schedule, it would end up looking much more natural.
I have used couple other brands of Henna that did not cover as well as this so this is definitely superior.
It ships fast and the new packaging is much needed improvement.

Received it yesterday and left it on for over 2 hours. I then rinsed it off and put some more on some sections that I missed and slept with that.. today my hair is richly dark and SO wonderfully soft and full, shiny and big and bouncy I LOVE this stuff!

A few months ago I used a product from an Etsy seller that had henna in it, but it also contained lots of other strengthening herbs and oils (which made it super runny). I now understand that it was more of a “gloss” because of this, rather than a full henna treatment. My hair was really soft from that so I decided to get the Henna Color Lab’s Natural Black Henna, because the color change from the other stuff was non-existent.
I did like the way it mixed very smoothly with distilled water, but my hair is now SUPER dry. And yes, I deep conditioned right afterwards for a couple of hours, with TWO types of protein free conditioners mixed together. The instructions said to blow dry afterwards, but I think that made things even worse. I have very fine, fragile African American 4b/4c hair and it seems like it did take away the curl pattern. My hair is now frizzy, doesn’t clump with gel, and is nowhere near soft; I’ve put tons of conditioners and oils on it since application, but it’s not really helping. I don’t think the henna is bad quality at all, but I now know that I have to add tons of other things to it to soften my results. I don’t have a ton of gray hairs, but it did do a decent job of covering them.
Shipping was lightning fast.

This product was really great. I had dark, previously dyed hair that had strong purple and red undertones. The henna covered that up flawlessly:) I only gave it four stars because my hair turned out a deep neutral dark brown, not black. However, I did leave it in my hair for 15 minutes less than the recommended time, and I am in no ways an expert at DIY hair. So, I don’t know if the lighter shade than was expected was my fault or the henna’s.
That being said, I am very satisfied with the color I did get. It’s a neutral, dark dark brown, and reminds me of Adriana Lima’s darker shades. The color looks natural, and brings out my eyes and my fair olive skintone with intensity.
Also, it gave my hair incredible volume and shine. It feels great:)
All in all, I would definitely recommend this product. Just follow the instructions, maybe even leave in the henna longer than 2 hours, and see how it works for your own hair.
Thanks for the organic hair dye option! More people need to switch off of using the chemicals and try a stunning, traditional method of hair coloring which gives natural looking color and strengthens hair!

Henna Color Lab is the best!!! I have thin, fairly straight, mousy ash brown hair. I have darkened it for years but could never use permanent hair dye as my hair would fall out and get very thin. I used cellophanes instead which colored my hair nicely but it washed out very quickly. I also used color depositing conditioner but it stained my hands and the shower and my hair was not very shiny. I’ve always had so much hair loss that I would have to remove the hair from my fingers while washing it and throw it in the trash when I was done. After using henna from Henna Color Lab I have had no more hair loss! Incredible!! My hair dresser even noticed lots of shorter hairs that she attributes to new growth. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I started after my daughter colored her hair with henna and it was so shiny and healthy looking that I had to try it. Although I like my hair very dark I was scared to use the black so I started with dark brown. The color was nice but not dark enough. I then used dark brown with two TBS of indigo. Still not dark enough. Next go around I mixed dark brown with half natural black and two TBS of indigo. Darker yet and even prettier. This time around I just used the Natural Black. I LOVE it! It is a beautiful black but not at all harsh. My hair is now full and shiny with color that lasts and no more hair loss! If you want a beautiful head of healthy black hair that is full of shine and very natural looking don’t hesitate to use Henna Color Lab Natural Black. I have never been so happy with my hair.
Thank you, thank you Henna Color Lab!!

I used the natural black for my naturally dark brown hair with few Grays. Also my hair is curly and dry as I am afro-latina. It as been 3 weeks and my hair is still fabulous and a beautiful black with pretty hi-lights! Also the curls are softer my hair is fuller looking which is awesome since I have been having thyroid issues and been loosing so much hair. Very happy with henna lab. My daughter also got her hair done in the wine red color on the too half of her hair and natural black on the bottom it looked beautiful! She loves it as well as how it feels, you can tell her hair looks healthier. I want my children to know of all natural products and not have hair problems later in life! This is a company I am happy with and already ordered more including a pack for my mom. Thank you!! We give 5 stars. For some reason when I tap on the 5 stars it doesn’t work , it stays at the 3.:(

This stuff took my hair from medium-dark brown to a very, very dark brown. It’s a lovely color, though I was shooting for jet black so I’ll probably try layering henna and indigo next time. Mixing and application was easy (I have shoulder length hair, straight, medium thickness, and I had some goop left over even though I only used one package… in case that helps anyone decide how many to buy!) and it rinsed more easily than the other brand I have used. The main draw for me over the other brand is that this stuff isn’t loaded up with perfumes. The henna naturally smells kinda strong (and I don’t love it) and the smell comes back for awhile whenever you get your hair wet…but it’s still WAY better than the migraine-inducing perfumes the other brands add. I’m about a week and a half in and haven’t noticed any fading yet, so that’s good. (Still getting the occasional blue-residue when I scratch my head though, haha.)

This was my first experience with henna and I think I had an okay turn out. I have medium to dark brown hair and the only thing the henna did was make it a shade darker. I did not get the natural black color I desired or was said to get so that was a big con for me. I would probably try something else next time to get the black. I followed all instructions and had an experienced henna user help me so no fault on my part. However, it does make your hair feel very nice afterwards

I was very disappointed with this dye. I have been using all-natural henna products for more than a year, mostly just pure henna for a red tint. I wanted a change, so I thought I’d try the natural black. However, the color was not nearly as black as I was expecting. In fact, it was much closer to the Mahogany dye (which I have also used, with results that were also disappointing). My hair does feel and look soft and shiny (hence the 2 stars), but the color was very disappointing.

I was really skeptical about the henna first because I always have hard time covering my grays. But Henna Color Lab product “Natural Black” covered my grays. Most importantly when the henna washed off my grays look reddish brown which I love…So my between phases are not so painful anymore…Even if the henna washes off there is still gray coverage. Also this brand is vegan and cruelty free what else I can ask for? Thank you guys! 🙂

This is my first henna experience and ill be a believer for life and also of henna color lab. I was constantly researching different brands and actually placed an order for lush henna in black but then immediately canceled it. I found out that they really aren’t 100% natural and I feel the company is a bit misleading when it comes to their products. This henna is great and my hair turned out exactly what I imagined and wanted. At first it was blue ish with green undertones and dry feeling but I followed the instructions and only conditioned right after the treatment. I waited 29 hrs before I shampooed and my hair is Sooo shiny and soft. It has gotten shinier and softer as I wash it. My hair was virgin hair with no damage so it took really well. I would highly urge everyone to buy this brand and definitely this color if you want a natural looking beautiful black head of hair with incredible shine. No I don’t work for the company but rely on other people’s opinions a lot. I just want to help you out! The odor smells like hay.. Strong hay.. Lol
